Art Concept. Mandarin Oriental Vienna
Rooted in the Mandarin Oriental philosophy A Sense of Place, we curated a site-specific art concept for the Vienna property that draws from the city’s rich cultural layers and its timeless rhythm. Anchored in the overarching narrative The Spirit of Walz, the concept was developed to resonate with the elegance, movement, and layered history of Vienna, echoed not only in its music and architecture but in the everyday poetry of the city.
In collaboration with local and international artists, the VELVENOIR team oversaw a multi-phased process—beginning with curatorial research, followed by a tailored open call for site-specific commissions. Each artist was thoughtfully selected based on their ability to interpret Vienna’s cultural narrative with authenticity and subtlety. Throughout the process, we facilitated studio visits, creative workshops, and close dialogue between the artists, design team, and project stakeholders.
From the Vienna State Opera to the gentle flow of the Stadtpark, each artwork acts as a visual metaphor—inviting guests to engage with Vienna’s iconic landmarks and hidden nuances through a contemporary lens. The result is a curated collection that not only reflects the spirit of the city, but also enriches the guest experience through meaning, beauty, and place.
